All about platon antoniou photographer photos. Plato was born in London in 1968 and raised in the Greek Islands until his family returned in the 1970s to England. He attended the St. Martin School of Art and earned an MA in Photography and Fine Arts at the Royal College of Art after earning a BA with honors in Graphic Design.
He was invited to NY to work for the late John Kennedy Jr. and his political magazine, ‘George,’ after working at British Vogue for several years. Plato developed a special relationship with Time magazine after making portraits for different international publications, including Rolling Stone, New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire, GQ, and Sunday Times Magazine, producing more than 20 envelopes.
In 2007, Plato took a picture of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for the cover of Person of The Year from Time magazine. This image was awarded first prize at the World Press Photo Contest. In 2008, he signed a multi-year contract with a New Yorker.
As a staff photographer, he has produced a series of large-scale photo essays, two of which won the ASME Awards in 2009 and 2010. The Plato in New Yorker portfolio focuses on many themes including the inauguration of President Obama, the U.S. Army, portraits of world leaders, and the Rights Movement. Civil.
The following year, Plato partnered with Human Rights Watch to help them celebrate those who fought for equality and justice in countries oppressed by political power. These projects highlight the human rights defenders of Burma as well as the leaders of the Egyptian revolution. Following his coverage in Burma, Plato photographed Aung San Suu Kyi for a Time Cover – a few days after his release from house arrest.

In 2011, Plato was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for collaborating on the topic of Russian Civil Society with The New Yorker Magazine and Plato’s first Human Rights Watch Monograph ‘Plato’s Republic’, published in 2004 by Phaidon Press.
Coinciding with its publication, the work is exhibited internationally, in London at the former Saatchi Gallery and the Milk Gallery in New York. His second book, ‘Power’ – a collection of portraits of more than 100 world leaders – was published in 2011 by Chronicle and after its success was chosen by Apple to launch as an app. The book includes portraits of Barack Obama, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, Dmitry Medvedev, Benjamin Netanyahu, Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Abbas, Tony Blair, Robert Mugabe, Silvio Berlusconi, and Muammar Qaddafi.
In recent years, progressive public speaking has played a major role in Plato’s career as a communicator and narrator. He has been invited to be a keynote speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Yale, the London School of Economics, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the International Photography Center in NY. He has also appeared on various television media including Charlie Rose (PBS), Morning Joe (MSNBC), GPS Fareed Zakaria (CNN), and BBC World News.
Between 2011-2013, Plato’s work was exhibited in galleries at home and abroad. He has exhibited in New York at the Matthew Marks Gallery and the Howard Greenberg Gallery, as well as internationally at the Colette Gallery in Paris, France.
The New York Historical Society also showcased a solo performance of Plato’s Civil Rights photo, which remains part of the museum’s permanent collection. Other permanent collections holding Plato’s photography include the Florida Museum of Photography Art in Tampa, Florida, and The Westlicht Museum of Photography in Vienna, Austria.
