Macro Food Photography. Hey guys, I’m Dave from Best Buy and today we’re gon na show you how to step up your food photo game macro style. I’M super excited because shooting food is one of my favorite things to do. Mouth-Watering images are so easy to take.
If you have the right recipe, that’s why I came on down to Houston to meet up with pro photographer mark mulligan. First, let’s take a second to talk about the gear that we’re using today, for this shoot we’re using a full-frame camera and a fast mid-range zoom lens.
I’Ve got the canon. Eos are paired with the 24 to 70, millimeter F 2.8 lens, but you can use the gear that you’re most comfortable with this combo is great for food because you can capture every angle. You know as a shoot today we’re gon na talk about three different things: capturing the details, light and our angle. So I really like these savage lights because they’re, small, portable and even battery-operated, so you can take them to restaurants. If you wanted to, we can go ahead and change the color of the savage lights to being anything that we really want to create some cool effects. So now that we have these cupcakes ready, let’s talk about the camera settings.
We’Re gon na want to capture this scene. I’M gon na go ahead and put my camera on aperture priority. That’S gon na. Allow me to really control my depth of field. I’M gon na put it at F. 2.8. That’S gon na give me a shallow depth of field. That’S gon na make the details on these cupcakes really pop. We want to make sure our shutter speed is fast enough that we’re not gon na get camera shake we’re not working with a tripod here. I’M just gon na put my hiya so high enough that I can get one 125th of a second ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light by boosting the ISO. You can get those higher shutter speeds.

These modern full-frame cameras have big enough sensors that they can handle higher ISO. So, let’s start with the wide-angle part of the lens, we can get right overhead, where you can really read those details. We can start to adjust these different shapes these different colors. These different details, we read to make pleasing patterns that make interesting photos we’re gon na just move things until we really get a frame. We like that overhead shot really cleans up your background. You’Re, not worried about extraneous things.
In the background of your image, because you have a clean white background underneath the details of these cupcakes, what I’m reading here is when you have that direct overhead shot. I read a lot of shadows on the cupcakes, so I’m just gon na grab a simple reflector and if I bring this reflector in here, hona I’m gon na give some fill I could bring in another light. I could turn that on the intensity, but sometimes just simply bring your reflector in there. It’S gon na fill some of those shadows, so the viewer isn’t getting distracted.
So now we’re gon na take a look at what this scene looks like from more of a normal range, maybe say a 50 millimeter lens. That’S gon na give us a more natural look, but it’s also gon na give us more control over our focus so say. If we came over to this line of cupcakes there’s three in a row we can get instead of going directly overhead, we can get say at a 45 degree angle and start looking out how we can bring out those details. We can throw the focus between that. First cupcake over to the second cupcake or to the third cupcake and start playing with what that relationship yields. Maybe you need a little extra light in that scene. You could bring a reflector in to bounce
Some of that light off of your LED light and fill some of those shadows, , but you really want to play as you get that longer lens you can play with, throwing that focus at F 2.8. You can really adjust your focus to accentuate the detail that you most want to show the other nice things that a shallow depth of field can really help us on, especially now that we’re not overhead is having a clean background.
The more shallow your depth of field is the more it’s gon na clean up your background. You won’t have extraneous things distracting from those details that you’re really trying to capture another great thing about using a telephoto lens is, if you come up to a scene like this, where we don’t have as clean of a background if you’re photographing these cupcakes moving 270 Millimeters and using a shallow depth of field like f 2.8, it’s gon na allow you to really get focused on those cupcakes and knock out the background at 70 millimetres.
Your background is gon na be more out-of-focus than it would be. At your wide angle, that’s gon na allow you to keep distracting things out of your image and really accentuate the details that you’ve want to read on these cupcakes
When I approach a scene, I always want to use three different looks. I always want to read what it looks like wide. I always want to read what it looks like with that normal lens, and then I also want to read what it looks like with a telephoto look. I try to approach every single photo shoot that way, because every single lens choice you make is going to give you a totally different.
Look. It’S gon na give you different controls, different abilities to bring in your background or take out that background. It’S gon na just drastically change, so I try and use every single focal length in every single shoot. So that’s great in everything. But can we eat the cupcakes now mmm?
